Late Inspection
Grace period
After the expiration of the KTEO, there is a 7-day grace period during which you can complete the inspection without any additional fee. This period allows for minor delays without financial penalty.
If the last day of the grace period falls on an official public holiday, the deadline is extended to the next working day, effectively giving an additional day for compliance.
Delays based on time period
If the grace period is exceeded, late fees apply depending on the delay:
• Up to 1 month: approx. €16
• 1 to 6 months: approx. €33
• Over 6 months: approx. €65
These are mandatory government fees added to the inspection cost.
Can I drive?
Driving with an expired KTEO is not legally allowed, even for a short delay. In practice, some drivers may continue to use their vehicle briefly, but there is always a risk of fines either from police checks or electronic cross-checks. Therefore, it is recommended to complete the inspection as soon as possible.
What if I don’t have the registration license?
If your vehicle registration license is held by the police or traffic authority due to a violation, you should visit the relevant department and request a stamped copy of the license. This copy can be used to proceed with the technical inspection.
If the license has been lost, you must issue a replacement through the appropriate authorities, such as Citizen Service Centers (KEP) or the Ministry of Transport, before proceeding with the inspection.
The vehicle registration license is a mandatory document for the inspection, and without it, the process cannot be completed.
What happens in case of vehicle inactivity?
When a vehicle is officially declared inactive (digitally or through the tax authority), the obligation for KTEO inspection is “frozen” for the entire period it remains out of circulation.
After reactivation, the owner has 15 calendar days to complete the KTEO inspection, presenting the relevant documents (proof of plate deposit and reactivation), in order to avoid late inspection fines.
⸻
Key points:
• If the KTEO expired during the inactivity period, the vehicle must be inspected within 15 days after returning to circulation.
• Proof of inactivity and reactivation must be presented at the inspection (printed or digital format).
• Driving the vehicle is allowed only for the purpose of going to the KTEO within this 15-day period.
• If the deadline is exceeded, late inspection fees will apply.
• Reactivation is completed via the myCAR platform of the tax authority, provided that road taxes are paid (proportionally) and valid insurance is in place.
